Hillside Aluminium

Our Hillside Aluminium smelter in Richards Bay, in the province of KwaZulu-Natal about 180 kilometres north of Durban, produces high-quality, primary aluminium for the domestic and export markets.

To support the development of the downstream aluminium industry in South Africa, a portion of liquid metal is supplied to Hulamin and other local companies that sell products in the domestic and export markets.

Aluminium is made by crushing and refining bauxite – an aluminium ore – into a white alumina powder then smelting the white alumina powder into aluminium metal.

The smelter uses alumina predominantly imported from Worsley Alumina in Australia to produce high-quality, primary aluminium. Hillside’s capacity makes it the largest producer of primary aluminium in the southern hemisphere.

EMPOWER

There are more than 1.8 billion young people in the world, and many emerging market countries currently have their largest populations of young people ever. And these numbers are only expected to grow over the next 10 years. Experiencing significant poverty, discrimination, violence, and exclusion, young people living at the margins face the lingering effects and challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and continued economic upheaval. The last several years have taken an unprecedented toll on their schooling, health, safety, and livelihoods. Our support to local partners aims to create more opportunities, assets, networks, and safe spaces for young people. EMpower provides financial grants and other value-added support to local organisations in emerging market countries in three interconnected areas that are key to youth development

Discovery Holdings Limited

Since inception in 1992, Discovery has been guided by a clear core purpose – to make people healthier and to enhance and protect their lives. We have been able to do this by pioneering the Shared-value Insurance model, which delivers better health and value for clients, superior actuarial dynamics for the insurer, and a healthier society. The success of the model in the markets where we operate has been testament to its importance to society.

To make people healthier and enhance and protect their lives, we must look at what compromises their health, wealth and safety, and the context we operate in. Our Shared-value Insurance model delivers better health and value for clients, superior actuarial dynamics for the insurer, and a healthier society. Key to delivering on our model, is a deep understanding of the reasons for the shift in the nature of risk.
