South Coast Foundation

South Coast Foundation is a private family foundation that operates a grantmaking program in South Africa. With an underlying commitment to poverty reduction, our mission is to support vulnerable children and their care providers through organizations that offer services at the local level. Our guiding principle is “No impact too small”.

Given our history in South Africa spanning over three decades, areas of support have changed with the times. However, one constant remains. We consider community-based organizations as central to our mission. At the heart of community development, these organizations provide a lifeline to impoverished communities. They stand on the frontlines, as the vanguards of impactful, relevant, and innovative solutions. After fifteen years of focusing on orphans and vulnerable children impacted by the HIV/Aids pandemic, South Coast Foundation’s current grantmaking program partners with rural organizations that provide services and educational opportunities to vulnerable children (OVC) ages 0 – 6 and their caregivers.

Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund

The Fund provides and manages grants community-based organisations (CBOs) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in priority districts. The priority districts are chosen for the five-year strategic period due to the challenges of children in those communities in alignment with the vision, mission, and strategic objectives of the Fund. These organisations that are called the implementing partners (IPs) are selected through a process called the Request for Proposals (RfP) which is run by the Fund periodically. The IPs need to be registered and have governance and all systems and procedures in place to work with the Fund on outcomes of the NMCF. Grants range from R200k to R1 million maximum and are guided by a binding contract which is supported by the implementation plan, budget and clear Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) processes. NMCF staff monitor the grants to ensure that they benefit children following the four focus areas. These grants run for a period between one year and five years depending on availability of funding and the performance of the implementing partner.
